Brenau Wins Third Straight; Tops Brewton Parker 72-47
The Brenau basketball team used another strong defensive effort to win their third straight Southern States Athletics Conference matchup with a resounding 72-47 win over Brewton Parker (Ga.) College on Saturday in Gainesville.
The win marked the third straight for the Golden Tigers (10-9 overall, 5-6 SSAC) who have secured wins over Middle Georgia State and Coastal Georgia during the past week.
After a close 12-11 first quarter, junior forward Briah Woods scored five of her 13 points in the period to help the Golden Tigers to an 18-5 run. Junior guard Kalin Williams added four points during the run, while freshman guard Kaylyn Brooks added four of her own to help Brenau take a 30-20 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Brenau continued their strong offensive play as Autumn Dodson opened the half with back-to-back three pointers to increase the score to 36-20. In the final period, the Golden Tigers held the Barons from a late run as Claire Zimmerman nailed a long three-pointer to increase the lead to 23 point and seal the victory.
"We played a complete game today," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We went through a rough stretch after the break where we couldn't find our rhythm. However, we played better each game of the three-game winning streak and put it all together today. I am very proud of this group and I hope we maintain during the stretch run."
Woods scored 13 points for the home team, while Zimmerman added 10. Williams added eight points and seven rebounds.
Brianna Boggan led Brewton Parker with 15 points.
Brenau shot 50% (25-50) from the floor, including a 58% (14-24) second half to the Barons' 26% (18-62). The loss dropped the visiting Barons to 4-17 overall and 0-12 in SSAC play.
The Golden Tigers next travel to Faulkner (Ala.) University on Thursday February 4th for a 5:30 central matchup.
