Basketball Runs Past Allen 82-77
The Brenau basketball team used a strong offensive effort to defeat Allen (SC) University 82-77 on Tuesday in Gainesville.
Brenau started the game with a quick 7-0 run as Kalin Williams scored on a driving layup, then Dominique Patrick found Jasmine Williams for a three-point play. Autumn Dodson finished the run with two free throws to give the Golden Tigers an early lead.
Allen responded with strong three-point shooting and a 12-8 run to close the quarter at 15-15.
After a second quarter of ties and lead changes, Allen took their largest lead, 33-29, on a Kamya Thomas layup with 1:42 remaining. However, a foul then a technical foul on Allen resulted in four free throws to help give the Golden Tigers a 39-35 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Claire Zimmerman knocked down an open three-pointer to increase the Brenau lead to 52-44, then Skye Overby scored at the buzzer on an offensive put back to increase the lead to 10.
Brenau maintained the lead throughout the fourth quarter to capture their 14th win of the season.
"This was a tough test against a very good opponent," said head coach Kris Stewart. "This was a team win and everyone contributed. I hope we can use this momentum to finish the year strong."
Brenau was led by Kalin Williams and Briah Woods who each had 18 points and eight rebounds. Dodson added 12 points, while Jasmine Williams added five points and seven rebounds.
Zenya Butler led Allen with 15 points.
Brenau shot 57% (15-26) from the floor in the second half and 47% (23/49) for the game.
The Golden Tigers (14-13 overall, 7-10 overall) will host SSAC foe Middle Georgia State on Senior Day on Saturday at 2 pm.
Brenau athletics will recognize seniors Anikee Combee, Myka Lightfoot, Jasmine Williams, Kalin Williams and Claire Zimmerman for their contributions to the Golden Tigers basketball team and University immediately after the game.
