Basketball Holds Off LaGrange For Seventh Win
The Brenau Golden Tigers held off the LaGrange (Ga.) College Panthers 59-56 to win their seventh game of the season on Tuesday in Gainesville.
The game was a tale of two halves as the Golden Tigers closed out the first quarter with a 14-2 run to take a 21-10 lead into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the momentum continued for Brenau as seven different players scored, while the defense held the visitors to only five points in the period to give the home team a commanding 36-15 lead at halftime.
In the fourth quarter, the Panthers went on a 25-7 run in the fourth quarter to make the score 57-52 with just under a minute to play. Kaylyn Brooks made two of four free throws in the last minute to hold off the visitors.
"This was a learning lesson for us," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We played to our potential in the first half, but relaxed after getting a big lead. Credit goes to LaGrange for playing hard down the stretch. We will learn from this and continue to improve."
Autumn Dodson led Brenau with 19 points, while Jasmine Knight added eight points, six steals, four assists and four rebounds. Brooks added eight points.
LaGrange's Lauren Johnson led all scorers with 21 points.
Brenau (7-1 overall) opens conference play on Saturday when they host Faulkner (Ala.) University for a junior varsity and varsity doubleheader. The junior varsity game begins at 12 pm eastern, while the varsity game will begin immediately after the conclusion of the first game.
