Basketball Drops Two SSAC Games
The Brenau basketball team posted a pair of losses to the University of Mobile (Ala.) and Loyola (La.) University over the break in Southern States Athletic Conference play this past weekend.
Against Mobile, the Golden Tigers started off sluggish, finding themselves in a 32-7 deficit after the first stanza. In the second quarter, Brenau outscored the host Rams 19-12 to make the score 44-26 at the break.
In the third quarter, the Golden Tigers pulled within 10 points, 48-38, then cut the lead to 58-56 in the fourth quarter, but were unable to finish the comeback.
"We missed several easy shots in the first quarter, which led to our early deficit," said head coach Kris Stewart. "The team deserves credit for making such a great comeback. Uncharacteristically, we missed 14 free throws, including several in the fourth quarter, which hurt us."
Briah Woods led Brenau with 13 points, while Autumn Dodson notched 12 points.
In the second game against Loyola, the Golden Tigers kept the score close 17-12 after the first quarter, but were unable to hold up over the final three quarters, falling 83-44.
"We didn't finish easy shots against a very good team," said Stewart. "Once the momentum shifted toward Loyola, we just couldn't get it back. We had a chance early, but let it slip away. I think we will learn from this experience and it will serve us well."
Shooting woes continued for Brenau, who shot 19% in the first half.
Woods again led the squad with 14 points, while Dodson chipped in 10 points.
Brenau (8-3 overall, 1-2 SSAC) next hosts Martin Methodist (Tenn) College on Thursday at 5:30 pm in Gainesville.
