Basketball Notches Road Win Over William Carey
The Brenau basketball team used a big third quarter to defeat William Carey (Miss.) University 52-46 on Saturday in Hattiesburg.
The Golden Tigers used back to back three-pointers from Autumn Dodson and Sydney Haas and a strong defensive effort to outscore the Crusaders 18-6 in the third quarter to capture their 10th win of the season.
In the first quarter, the Crusaders shot 3-4 from three point range to take an early 13-10 lead. Brenau answered with 18 points in the second quarter, including three-pointers from Kayla Mitchell and Shymane Callahan to take one point lead into halftime.
In the final stanza, the Golden Tigers increased their lead to 15 behind fast break layups from Jasmine Knight and Quinnesha Turner, while Dodson hit two free throws to finish off the game.
Dodson led the Golden Tigers with 14 points, while Knight added five points, 12 rebounds and six assists. Turner added four points and six rebounds and Haas notched seven points and 3 rebounds.
"Our defense really came through for us today," said head coach Kris Stewart. "Our guards rebounded very well and our bench hit some key shots to help us win this game. Anytime we can get a road conference win is a great day and our team pulled through when it mattered."
Latia Pullum led all scorers with 16 points for the Crusaders.
Brenau (10-5 overall, 3-4 SSAC) next travels to Blue Mountain on Monday for a 3 pm eastern conference matchup.
