Strong First Quarter Propels Basketball Past Faulkner
The Golden Tigers basketball team jumped out to an early commanding lead and never trailed en route to a 77-64 Southern States Athletic Conference victory against Faulkner (Ala.) University on Saturday in Montgomery.
Jasmine Knight scored 11 of her 13 points in the first quarter to give Brenau a 17-8 first quarter lead and help the Golden Tigers win their 13th game of the season.
Brenau led 34-21 at the break, but the host Eagles rallied with a 20-14 third quarter to cut the score to 48-41. Faulkner (14-8 overall, 6-6 SSAC) would get no closer, however, as the Golden Tigers scored 29 points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
The Golden Tigers held a decided advantage from the foul line (26-11) over Faulkner and also won the turnover battle (13-21).
"This was a really great team win," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We had a good game plan coming in to the game and the team had flawless execution. We had a great week of practice and it really showed today."
"Faulkner has so many good players and is playing really well, so it was nice for us to be able to get past them with a win on the road."
Briah Woods led the Golden Tigers offense with 18 points and six rebounds, while Knight posted her fourth double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Autumn Dodson added 13 points, while Maegan Kenimer chipped in 10 points off the bench.
Faith Legate led all scorers with 19 points.
Brenau (13-6 overall, 6-5 SSAC) next hosts Loyola (18-4 overall, 10-2 SSAC) on Thursday at 7 pm eastern in Gainesville.
