Basketball Cruises Past Bluefield 77-62
The Brenau basketball team used a dominating first quarter to cruise past Bluefield (Va.) College 77-62 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Saturday in Gainesville.
The Golden Tigers posted a 16-6 run to close out the first quarter to help them win their 14th game of the season.
Senior Autumn Dodson started the first quarter run with a three-point basket, then Jasmine Knight found Lia Thomas for a fast break layup to increase the lead to 15-7. Freshman Ashanti Brown scored the next four points to make the score 19-7, and then a Kaylyn Brooks driving layup increased the score to 21-9. Dodson then capped off 16-6 run with another three-pointer to roll to a commanding 15 point lead.
The Rams (10-10 overall, 7-8 AAC) cut the deficit to 11 points in the fourth quarter, but a three-pointer by senior Sydney Haas closed out the victory for the Golden Tigers.
"This was a very good win against a solid team," said head coach Kris Stewart. "Credit goes to our defense, which was really solid throughout the game. Our communication and preparation really showed today."
Dodson led all scorers with 26 points on 8-11 shooting, including 5-8 from three point range. Brooks added 15 points, while Thomas posted 10 points and 13 rebounds. Knight added seven points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Haas posted seven points and three rebounds.
Danae Cox led Bluefield with 20 points.
Brenau (14-6 overall, 9-5 conference) next travels to Columbia (SC) College (3-18 overall, 3-13 SSAC) on Tuesday for an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup.
