Montreat Edges Past Basketball In AAC Play
Montreat, North Carolina- The Brenau University basketball team battled offensive woes in a 55-47 loss to Montreat College on Saturday.
The Golden Tigers defense posted its third consecutive game of holding opponents to under 60 points as the host Cavaliers had single-digit scoring totals in both the second and fourth quarters. However, poor shooting and turnovers limited the Brenau offense throughout the game.
After a sluggish first quarter, the Golden Tigers responded with a 14-7 second quarter as a three-pointer by Celine Vega just before the half cut the Montreat lead to 26-25. However, the squad struggled in the second half and allowed the Cavaliers to escape with an eight point win.
Brenau offense shot 37% from the field (17-46) and had 27 turnovers as the team struggled to put points on the board.
"We are playing outstanding defense right now, but are struggling with our offense," said head coach Kris Stewart. "Our early season injuries have contributed to our lack of cohesion on the offensive end, and we will continue to work hard to improve on that end of the court."
Jane Lester led all scorers with 14 points, but was the lone Golden Tiger in double-figures against the Cavaliers.
Jala Daniels led Montreat with 13 points.
Brenau (5-5 overall, 3-4 AAC) next hosts Union College (4-6 overall, 2-5 AAC) on December 11th at 5:30 in Gainesville.
