Basketball Slips Past Voorhees College 62-60
Gainesville, Georgia- Junior guard Hanna Grogan scored on an offensive put back with thirty two seconds remaining to help the Brenau basketball team slip past Voorhees (S.C.) College 62-60 in a non-conference matchup on Saturday.
At the 4:39 mark in the first quarter, senior Celine Vega hit one of her two three pointers to give the home team its first lead at 10-8. Grogan found freshman Katherine Fourie on a layup to increase the score to 12-8, then Grogan hit a three pointer from the top of the key to give the Golden Tigers a 15-8 lead.
The home team kept the lead throughout the second quarter and took its largest lead of the game on a Jamie Bunting layup to make the score 27-15. Voorhees rallied at the end of the period to cut the score to 29-23 at intermission.
The Golden Tigers kept the visiting Tigers in check until the fourth quarter as the Voorhees pressure forced Brenau to give up the lead at the 5:28 mark. The Tigers' Ashleigh Stockard hit a three pointer from the wing to give her team a 56-53 lead. Two free throws from sophomore Xian Lopez cut the Golden Tiger lead to 57-56, and then Lopez found Fourie for a corner three pointer to give Brenau a 58-56 advantage.
The Tigers responded as Ca'washa Cesar made one of two free throws, then Stockard scored on a steal and a layup to give the visitors as 59-57 lead with 2:02 remaining. After a Voorhees foul at the 1:52 mark, Fourie sank two free throws to tie the score at 59-59.
Voorhees again answered as Jessica Gaston sank one of her two free throws to make the score 60-59. On the ensuing possession, Carmen Garcia-Pitarch Lopez missed a corner three pointer, but Grogan crashed the offensive glass for the put back to give her team the lead and the win.
"We showed both resiliency and good team play today," said head coach Kris Stewart. "Even though we are missing six players right now, we had some players step up and contribute today against a really tough Voorhees team."

Brenau shot a season-high 47.8% (23-47) from the field while Voorhees shot 28.1% (23-62) for the game.
Grogan led the Golden Tigers with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists, and Fourie added 13 points and three assists. Lopez also chipped in eight points and five assists.
Cesar led Voorhees with a game-high 21 points.
Brenau (1-1 overall) next hosts Pensacola Christian College (1-2 overall) on Thursday at 5:30 in a non-conference matchup.
