Basketball Rolls Past Columbia 94-72 in AAC Opener
Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau basketball team used a balanced offensive attack to roll past Columbia (S.C.) College 94-72 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference opener on Saturday.
Five Golden Tigers scored in double-figures and the squad shot a strong 49% (34-70) from the field to capture its first conference win of the season.
After the opening tip, the visiting Koalas (1-1) took an early 2-0 lead, but trailed the remainder of the contest as the Golden Tigers led by as many as 28. The home team led 50-35 at intermission and 75-51 entering the fourth quarter and cruised to the victory.
Freshman Katherine Fourie led the attack with 17 points and junior Hanna Grogan added 16 points and five rebounds. Post Cameron Mims continued her strong senior campaign with 16 points and five rebounds, while fellow senior Celine Vega and junior Tatyiana McClendon each added 11 points. Senior Jamie Bunting also chipped in nine points to the win.
Columbia's Denijah Johnson led all scorers with 24 points.
The Golden Tigers shot a solid 13-32 (41%) from three point range and pounded out 17 offensive rebounds. Columbia shot 37% (13-35) from the floor and only 18% (4-22) from behind the arc.
Brenau (3-1 overall, 1-0 AAC) next travels to Point (Ga.) University (2-1 overall, 0-1 AAC) for a conference matchup on Wednesday at 5:30 pm.
