Defense Propels Golden Tigers Past Columbia International 50-43
Columbia, South Carolina- The Brenau basketball team used a strong defensive performance to defeat Columbia International University 50-43 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Wednesday.
The Golden Tigers held the host Rams to 25% shooting (16-64) and used a 20 point fourth quarter to capture the squad's seventh win of the season.
After a tight first three quarters, Brenau outscored Columbia International 20-12 in the final stanza to finish the game.
Junior guard Hanna Grogan led all scorers with 15 points, including a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line, while junior post Ashanti Brown posted a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman Katherine Fourie added 11 points, including five points in the final quarter.
The Rams' Britney Brown led CIU with 14 points.
"We had a great team win," said head coach Kris Stewart. "Defensively, we did some really great things. Tatyiana McClendon did an outstanding job containing CIU's leading scorer and rebounder, but we also defended really well as a team. Hopefully, our fourth quarter offense will finally be the start of us getting out of our shooting slump and getting back to playing great offense."
Brenau (7-11 overall, 4-10 AAC) next hosts Bluefield (Va.) College (6-13 overall, 5-9 AAC) on Saturday at 2 pm in Gainesville.
