Basketball Loses 65-63 Heartbreaker to Point University
Gainesville, Georgia- Visiting Point University hit a shot with 3.5 seconds remaining and the host Brenau basketball team missed a shot to tie at the buzzer to allow the visitors to escape with a 65-63 win in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Saturday.
The Golden Tigers were sharp early as the squad jumped out to a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Brenau extended its lead to 10 as junior Ashanti Brown made one of two free throws to make the score 22-12.
Brenau held the lead throughout the third and fourth quarter until the Skyhawks' Autumn Monkhouse hit a three pointer from the wing to tie the game at 63-63 with only 56 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing possession, junior Hanna Grogan missed a driving layup with 26 seconds to allow Point an opportunity to take the lead. With four seconds remaining, Point's Te Johnson hit a shot to give the visitors their first lead of the game at 65-63.
On the final possession, sophomore Tamia Francis got a good look to tie the game but came up just short in the loss.
Ashanti Brown led all scorers with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Carmen Garcia-Pitarch Lopez added a career high 14 points and six rebounds. Dyiesha Brown added 12 points and Grogan posted 11 points.
Johnson led the Skyhawks with 14 points and Kimberly Forbes added nine points and 14 rebounds.
Brenau (8-14 overall, 5-13 AAC) next hosts Montreat (N.C.) University (13-10 overall, 10-9 AAC) on Wednesday at 5:30 pm in conference play.
