Late Jumper Propels Basketball Past CIU 70-67
Gainesville, Georgia- Tyleia Williams hit a three pointer with two seconds remaining to propel the Brenau basketball team past Columbia International (S.C.) University 70-67 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play on Monday.
In a close, hard fought game with a total of twenty-three ties, neither team could seize control as the game went down to the final minute of play.
With 1:07 remaining, the Rams' Tiona Walls hit a short jumper to give her team a 67-65 lead. On the ensuing possession, Williams was fouled on a fast break layup and the sophomore hit two free throws to tie the game at 67-67.
After a defensive stop for the Golden Tigers left 30 seconds remaining in regulation, the home team held the ball for the last shot. Sophomore Tamia Francis drove the lane and found Williams open on the left wing for the game winning jumper with two seconds remaining. The Rams heaved a desperation three pointer at the buzzer that was off the mark to allow the Golden Tigers to escape with the win.
Sophomore Xian Lopez led all scorers with a career-high 12 points, while junior Tatyiana McClendon posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Williams and Francis each added nine points in the win.
