Basketball Rolls Past Columbia International 80-71
Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau basketball team used a balanced offensive attack to defeat Columbia International (SC) University 80-71 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Thursday.
The Golden Tigers had seven players post seven or more points as the squad rolled to its fifth win of the season.
After 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Golden Tigers continued to add to the advantage with an 11-1 run to start the second period. The lead continued throughout the quarter as the Golden Tigers led by as many as 19 points.
The Golden Tigers held the lead throughout the third period and into the fourth when the visiting Rams cut the lead to nine with 9:46 remaining on a Zion Neat three pointer. However, the home team responded with consecutive baskets by Nyla Moore and Katherine Fourie to extend the lead back to 12 points to cruise to victory.
Brenau shot 33-69 (47.8%) from the floor, while Columbia International was 23-61 (37.7%) for the game.
Junior Tamia Francis led the scoring with 19 points, while senior Hanna Grogan added 15 points on 7-12 shooting. Fellow senior Tatyiana McClendon posted 10 points and sophomore Katherine Fourie had eight points. Three Golden Tigers chipped in seven points each as junior Xian Lopez, sophomore Michalea Cope and freshman Nyla Moore added to the balanced attack.
Brenau (5-8 overall, 5-8 AAC) next travels to face St. Andrews (NC) University (1-15 overall, 1-13 AAC).
