Basketball Defeats Voorhees to Open 2021 Season
Voorhees, South Carolina- The Brenau basketball team opened the 2021-22 season with a 69-56 win over Voorhees (SC) College in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.
The Golden Tigers jumped out to an 11-4 lead as sophomore Hanna Cannon and freshman Jill Pittman hit consecutive three pointers to start the run. The squad continued to put on the pressure by closing out the quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 17-7 lead.
In the second quarter, Voorhees answered with an eight point run to cut the deficit to 25-17, however, the Golden Tigers responded as junior Tyleia Williams scored on a short jumper to increase the lead back to ten points. After a Hanna Cannon offensive rebound and putback, Williams scored again on a drive to close out the half with a 33-22 advantage.
In the third quarter, the Golden Tigers held Voorhees in check as junior Katherine Fourie scored eight of her game-high 18 points in the quarter to keep the Brenau lead at 16 points.
The Golden Tigers continued to hold off the Voorhees runs as freshman Kayla Stafford scored five consecutive points to help the team clinch the win.
Fourie led all scorers with 18 points on 8-16 shooting, while Cannon scored a career-high 12 points. Stafford added a career-high 10 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Nyla Moore had nine points, five rebounds and four assists.
Brenau outshot Voorhees 40.3% (27-67) to 30.4% (21-69) from the field.
Brenau (1-0 overall) opens conference play on Saturday as the team hosts Johnson (Tenn.) University (0-1 overall) at 2 pm.
