Fourth Quarter Propels Basketball Past Johnson 69-63
Gainesville, Georgia- A strong defensive fourth quarter and some timely shots helped propel the Brenau basketball team over Johnson (Tenn.) University 69-63 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday.
In the first quarter, the Golden Tigers struggled to find the mark as the team fell behind 21-17. The visiting Royals held Brenau in check throughout the second quarter to take a 43-33 lead into the break.
In the third quarter, the Golden Tigers finally found their offensive momentum as senior Shaniya Gause hit a corner three pointer to start a 14-7 run for the home team. During the run, sophomore Nyla Moore scored six points and assisted on two other baskets to help her team cut the deficit to 56-51.
During the final period, the Brenau defense finally came through by holding the visitors to only seven points and the offense finally found its mark. Junior Katherine Fourie hit a long jumper to give the Golden Tigers a 62-61 lead and then junior Jasmin Jackson added a driving layup to increase the lead to 64-61. After a missed jumper by the Royals' Phoebe Vlk, Fourie hit another three pointer to secure the victory.
Moore led all scorers with a career high 20 points, while Fourie added 13 points. Senior Xian Lopez added nine points and nine rebounds.
Johnson's Jordan Smith had a team-high 16 points.
Brenau (2-0 overall, 1-0 AAC) next hosts Point (Ga.) University (3-0 overall, 1-0 AAC) in an AAC matchup on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
