Basketball Loses Heartbreaker to Hollins 66-65
Decatur, Georgia- The Brenau basketball team fell in heartbreaking fashion to Hollins (Va.) University 66-65 in a non-conference matchup on Friday.
The Golden Tigers struggled out of the gate as Hollins shot a blistering 69% in the quarter to take a commanding 23-16 lead. Brenau rallied with a solid second quarter as the squad narrowed the deficit to 33-27 going into the break.
After the break, the Golden Tigers came out hot as the squad outscored Hollins 19-15 in the period to keep the score close at 48-46 going in the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, senior guard Anna Gliatta hit a driving layup to start a 9-0 run to give Brenau a six point lead at the 5:49 mark.The Golden Tigers led until the 1:30 mark when a critical turnover turned into a fast break basket for Hollins, who took the lead, then used the momentum to go up four points late. Brenau's Kristina Peach hit a three pointer to cut the deficit to only one point with under a minute to play, but ultimately the squad came up short in a 66-65 loss.
Junior forward Caylie Long led Brenau with 18 points and Peach added 15 points. Gliatta added 11 and sophomore post Jael Flinn added 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Hollins' Zaria Holden led all scorers with 28 points.
Brenau (3-3 overall, 0-1 AAC) continues play on Sunday at the Agnes Scott Tipoff Classic when the squad takes on host Agnes Scott (Ga.) at 2 pm.
