Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau basketball team came up just short in a 76-74 loss to Spartanburg Methodist (SC) College in an Appalachian Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday.
After a lackluster first quarter, both teams played even in the second quarter to allow the visiting Pioneers a six-point lead going into intermission.
Brenau stormed out to a 21-14 advantage in the third quarter and led by as many as six in the period. The home team held off a Pioneer rally to take a one-point lead into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, the teams battled evenly throughout the period until the Pioneers seized control with an 8-0 run to regain the lead. The Golden Tigers cut the deficit to two points late, but the visitors went 4-4 on free throw attempts down the stretch to escape with the win.
Junior forward Caylie Long led all scorers with 29 points while senior guard Anna Gliatta added 13 points. Junior guard S.G. Bertolini chipped in 7 points and 7 rebounds.
Destiny Middleton led Spartanburg Methodist with 17 points.
Brenau (8-12 overall, 3-9 AAC) next travels to face Bryan (Tenn.) College (14-5 overall, 11-1 AAC) on Wednesday at 5:30 eastern.
