Golf Competes in SSAC Conference Tournament
Montgomery, Ala. - In their inaugural season, the Brenau golf team finished 11th at the SSAC Women's Golf Championships.
On day one, the Golden Tigers started slowly to finish with a team score of 421 at the Lagoon Park Course. Senior Kelly Garland led the Golden Tigers with an 88, while freshman Morgan Wood finished two strokes back with a day one score of 90. Freshman Lauren Smith shot a 105, while Caylen Perry ended day one with a 138.
"We struggled as a team on day one, unfortunately, but the ladies bounced back on day two and played a much better round of golf," said head coach Damon Stancil. "The course conditions were quite different than what we had seen all year and I know that influenced our play, especially on day one."
Day two showed better scores for the Golden Tigers as the team found their stroke. Garland again led the way with an 83, which was good enough for a tie for 22nd place, while Wood improved two strokes with an 88 to finish tied for 34th. Smith improved her round two score to 101 to finish in 56th place, and Perry, in her first collegiate golf tournament, finished 59th.
Stancil noted how much his players have committed to this inaugural season and pleased he is with their dedication.
"I can't even begin to express how proud I am of the young ladies and their commitment to this team. They worked so hard and dedicated so much time to help ensure the success of our new program."
"Brenau and Golden Tigers Golf owe Caylen Perry a very special thanks for her willingness to step up for our team. She came in with only a few days' notice and played in her first competitive tournament since high school. Caylen did a fantastic job of representing Brenau University and the Golden Tigers Golf Team."
The Golden Tigers return two letter winners from this year's team for 2014-15 and look to build on their solid start.
