Golf Finishes 10th at Coastal Georgia Invitational

In the opening event of the season, the Brenau golf team finished in 10th place at the Coastal Georgia Fall Invitational in Brunswick, Georgia.

Playing on the Pine Lakes Course at Jekyll Island Golf Club, Brenau finished the two-day event with a team score of 725.

On day one, the young Golden Tigers team-made up of all freshman and sophomores- shot a team score of 367. Freshman Sarah Jane Bowers led the way with an opening day 81, which tied her for 16th place. Sophomore Morgan Wood shot an 89 which placed her in a tie for 43rd place, while freshman Brittan Slaton notched a 92 to place her in 51st place. Freshman LaKese Brown shot a 105, fellow newcomer Olivia Davis added a 110 and sophomore Lauren Smith scored 112.

Day two marked improvement for the Golden Tigers as the team put up a team score of 358. Bowers improved on her solid opening match with a day-two score of 79 to finish her collegiate debut tied for 16th place. Wood also improved on day two by eight strokes, finishing tied for 35th with a day two score of 81. Slaton matched her day one score with a 92, which placed her in 51st place. Brown (108), Davis (106) and Smith (109) rounded out the individual scores for the Golden Tigers.

I am pleased with the teams overall performance in our first tournament of the season," said head coach Damon Stancil. "Sara Jane [Bowers] and Morgan [Wood] did a great job leading the way for our team, but we still have plenty to work on in order to post better scores this fall. Pine Lakes was a challenging venue and I am proud of the way the top 3 were able to handle pressure in order to post solid scores. We are still a young team, but I know the team learned a lot from this tournament and they will work even harder to prepare for the Southern Showdown in a few weeks".

Northwood (Fla.) University won the tournament with a two-day score of 604. SSAC newcomer Dalton (Ga.) State came in second place with a team score of 629.

Brenau returns to the course at the Birmingham (Ala.) Southern Showdown on October 5th.
