Golf Places Ninth at Winter Invitational
In the first tournament of the spring season, the Brenau golf team finished 9th out of 11 teams at the 5th Annual Winter Invitational hosted by Coastal Georgia on Monday and Tuesday at St. Simons, Ga.
Brenau shot an overall 741 for the tournament, including a top-five individual finish by freshman Sara Jane Bowers (FR/Statesboro, Ga.).
Bowers (75-85—160) led the Golden Tigers with a strong fifth place showing out of 63 golfers, while sophomore Morgan Wood (SO/Dahlonega, Ga.) (88-89—177) followed with a 23rd place finish.
Bowers had six birdies in her opening round 75, including five in a six hole stretch to lead the squad.
Freshman Olivia Davis (FR/Flowery Branch, Ga.) (97-104—201) and LaKese Brown (FR/Albany, Ga.) (105-98—203) finished 53rd and 54th respectively, while Brittan Slaton (FR/Cleveland, Ga.) (116-105—221) placed in 58th place.
''We didn't quite play up to our potential or my expectations in this first event as a team, but the ladies continue to gain valuable experience, said head coach Damon Stancil. "Individually, Sara Jane played two outstanding rounds of golf and gave us a glimpse at what she is truly capable of on Monday. I'm very excited about the rest of the spring season and the future of the program!"
Host Coastal Georgia finished in fifth place, while fellow SSAC teams Loyola (La.) University and Faulkner (Ala.) University took sixth and seventh respectively.
Brenau next travels to Callaway Gardens, Ga. on February 28th for the Berry Invitational.
