Golf Receives SSAC Postseason Honors
Members of the Brenau golf team were honored by the Southern States Athletic Conference for their academic and athletic performances during the 2015 season.
Sara Jane Bowers (FR/Statesboro, Ga.) was selected as both an All-Conference performer and an All-Freshman team member by the conference coaches.
The Statesboro, Georgia native finished her inaugural regular season with two top-ten finishes to cap a strong freshman campaign. At the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational in February, Bowers placed fifth out of 63 golfers and followed that performance with a seventh place finish at the Berry Invitational.
Lauren Smith (SO/Gainesville, Ga.) was selected as the Brenau Individual Champions of Character winner. Recipients are chosen that best represent the NAIA Five Core Values of Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship and Servant Leadership.
The entire Brenau team was also selected by the conference coaches as the Champions of Character team recipient.
Smith and Morgan Wood (SO/Dahlonega, Ga.) were also honored as SSAC All-Academic team members for their academic success. Honorees must have a minimum of 24 credit hours and at least a 3.25 GPA.
"I am very proud of SJ (Sara Jane) and the rest of our team," said head coach Damon Stancil. "The ladies were pretty surprised by the Champions of Character award from the other coaches in the conference, but I see their exceptional character every day. I think it was a well-deserved award for the team and I'm confident they will continue to represent Brenau in a way that best represents the award."
"SJ has performed so well for the team this year. She's done a lot for the program here in year two, and I think she's just scratching the surface in terms of her golf skills and scoring abilities. The future of Brenau golf is very bright! Go Tigers!"
The team looks ahead to the SSAC Championships, which start today in Montgomery, Alabama.
