Golf Receives SSAC Postseason Honors
Members of the Brenau women's golf team were honored for their athletic and academic performances by the Southern States Athletic Conference this past week at the conference banquet.
Morgan Wood and Sara Jane Bowers were both selected as 2017 SSAC Women's Golf All-Conference selections, based on their performances during the season as selected by the conference coaches.
Wood, a 2016 All-Conference honoree, showed consistent play throughout the spring season. The senior posted a personal-best 18-hole score of 69 to capture second place at the Phoenix Invitational en route to SSAC Golfer of the Week honors for the week of April 10-16. She also earned two other top-four finishes by placing second at the Cavalier Invitational and tying for fourth at the Golden Tigers Invitational.
Bowers, a 2015 All-Conference selection, also played well this season with multiple top finishes. The junior's highest finish was a fourth place tie with Wood at the Golden Tigers Invitational. She also placed eighth at the Phoenix Invitational and posted fifth at the Cavalier Invitational.
"Morgan (Wood) and Sara Jane (Bowers) are exceptional representatives for Brenau golf and I'm so proud that they were recognized for their athletic efforts and performance," said head coach Damon Stancil. "They have done a great job of continuing to work on their game and sharpen their skills, which has shown in their tournament scores."
The team also received two character awards as Lauren Smith was the team's individual Champions of Character Award winner, while the entire squad was chosen as the SSAC Champions of Character team.
Champions of Character winners are selected for best representing the NAIA's Five Core Values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
Additionally, Wood, Bowers and Smith joined teammates, Amber Clayton, Olivia Davis and Megan Reddick as SSAC All-Academic Team members. Team members must have a minimum of a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and be enrolled in at least four semesters of college.
