Soccer Opens Season With Tie
August 29, 2009
MOBILE, Ala-- The Brenau soccer team opened their season today with a hard fought 2-2 tie against the University of Mobile in double overtime.
Mobile scored first but the Tigers came back fairly quickly with an equalizer. Brenau's goal came from a nice combination play that started in the midfield from Marilyn Anderson out to the flank to Alyssa Schmucker who crossed it into the 6 box and Freshman Shawna Manchette scored her first college goal. The match was tied 1-1 at half time.
In the second half Mobile again scored first, but then off a direct free kick about 10-15 yards outside the box, Tori Futrell scored a nice shot into the low left corner that the goalkeeper just missed.
The game then went into two 10 minute overtimes and neither team was able to put the ball in the net, which resulted in a tie. The second overtime is when Brenau played their best soccer of the match and controlled the majority of that half.
Junior All Conference goalkeeper Lisa Lesnick had a good showing and was picked as the Tigers player of the game. She had some great saves and really kept Brenau in the game. It was a tough battle and other players who did well for BU defensively were Dolapo Obahor and Tori Futrell. One of the biggest problems for the Tigers was giving up too many corner kicks that we should not have.
The Tigers now travel to Spring Hill, MS for a 4 pm match on Saturday.
