October 3, 2009
Montgomery, AL- All-Conference Striker Lily Futrell scored the game winner with 1:00 left in the second overtime on as assist from Geneve Lopez as the Brenau soccer team defeated Faulkner, AL 3-2 today. The Tigers currently sit atop the SSAC standings along with Lee and Shorter at 2-0, and they are 6-2-1 on the season. Faulkner drops to 2-3, 5-5 with the loss.Faulkner scored the first two goals of the game within the first 30 minutes of the first half and maintained a 2-0 lead at halftime. Brenau got on the scoreboard 10 minutes into the second half when Lauren Hagins scored her third goal in as many games with a nice assist from Marilyn Anderson. Futrell then tied the game, converting on a pass from midfield by Dolapo Obahor. Things went back and forth through the rest of regulation and into the first overtime as neither team could put the ball in the net. Faulkner actually outshot the Tigers 11-8 for the game, but Brenau refused to quit and came out on top in the end. Coach Mike Lochstampfor singled out Futrell and Alyssa Schmucker as the players of the game, noting that both played the entire 115 minutes on a hot and muggy day. "We showed a lot of heart and resiliency coming back from the 2-0 deficit, and the play of Innis Ette, holding Faulkner's leading scorer, who also leads the conference in scoring, scoreless was critical to the victory," said Lochstampfor. Next up for Brenau will be a home SSAC contest next Tuesday against Brewton Parker at 7 pm at the Allen Creek Soccer Complex.
