Tigers Slosh Way to SSAC Win Over Columbia
October 28, 2009
Gainesville, GA- Senior striker Lily Futrell scored a school record five goals tonight to lead the Brenau soccer team to a 6-4 win over SSAC foe Columbia, SC. For the second straight game, the Tigers had to withstand terrible weather, playing through a driving rainstorm to run their season record to 9-3-2 and their conference mark to 4-1-1, good enough for second place in the SSAC. Columbia actually opened up a 2-0 lead, scoring two early goals before Brenau rallied back to tie the score at 2-2.
Each team tallied another goal to tie the score at 3-3 before the Tigers scored twice more to go into halftime with a 5-3 advantage. Alyssa Schmucker had a goal and an assist on the night and Shawna Manchette and Lauren Hagin each had an assist. "It was really difficult for both teams because the rain made the field unplayable, but our players put together enough good play to prevail on a night that we could have been upset because of the conditions. In addition to the big night for Lily, I thought Dola Obahor played very well for us," said Coach Mike Lochstampfor. The Tigers will travel to Southern Wesleyan on Thursday as they push toward their goal of hosting at least one round in the playoffs.
