Golden Tigers Fall to SCAD in Season Opener
GAINESVILLE, Ga - On Friday evening, the Brenau University soccer team stepped out onto the field, for their season opener against SCAD Savannah (Ga). Early in the game, the Bees' offense set a dominant tempo on the field. The young Golden Tigers fell short at the goal, which led to their first defeat of the season, bringing their record to 0-1.
"Our back four played tremendous defense", commented Coach Lochstampfor, "and the score was not indicative of our overall play or the tempo of the game". Janay Hunt (Madison, AL), Anna Garrett (Marietta, GA), Hannah Norwood (Lawrenceville, GA), and Rachel Wright (Gainesville, GA) were relentless in their battle against the Bees, making great plays throughout the game.
Although Brenau was steadfast in their defensive pressure, SCAD aggressively took a shot. Syndey Benda (freshmen forward for the Bees) scored the first goal of the game, building momentum for another offensive attack.
The Golden Tigers created some chances offensively as well, but were unable to execute a goal-scoring play. Out of the team's 8 shots, freshman forward, Elizabeth Campbell (Richmond Hill, GA), led Brenau with 4. Freshman Kayla Madsen (Flowery Branch, GA) and senior Erin Brinks (Ontario, Canada) each made 2 shots, and played great from the flanks.
Coach Lochstampfor was pleased overall with the performance of all his freshmen players. Although two crucial mistakes were made defensively, raw talent was demonstrated again and again. "It's the start of the season, of course there is room for improvement, however our team has potential we have yet to tap into", he added.
The Golden Tigers soccer team will be back in action this Tuesday, August 30th. They will be traveling to Montgomery, Alabama, to compete against Faulkner University. The conference match is scheduled to start at 7:30pm (est).
