Brenau Defeats AUM for First Conference Win

MONTGOMERY, Al - The Golden Tigers traveled to Auburn University at Montgomery yesterday to play in their second conference match-up of the season. Brenau pounced on the Warhawks winning 2-1. The victory brought Brenau's overall record to 1-3-2 (1-1 in conference), as AUM drops to 1-4 (0-1 in SSAC).

"We played very well in the first half. We scored a nice goal in the first 10 minutes and got a gift from the other team with an own goal to send us into half time with a 2-0 lead which is a great position to be in when playing on the road", stated Coach Mike Lochstampfor.

Freshman forward, Jenny Knibbs (Doncaster, England) scored Brenau's first goal at the 9:37 mark. At the end of the half the Golden Tigers led the Warhawks 2-0 though AUM out shot Brenau 11-4.

Coach Lochstampfor added, "They had the momentum for most of the 2nd half and scored their goal on one of the many corner kicks we gave up. We were able to defend well and I was happy not to concede any more goals. We had a couple of nice opportunities off of some counterattacks but were not able to capitalize on those."

AUM continued to mount offensive attacks as goalkeeper Taryn Ruess (High Springs, FL) collected 8 saves in the match. Jenny Knibbs and Erin Brinks (Ontario, Canada) made 2 shots a piece, while Elizabeth Campbell (Richmond Hill, GA), Rachel Zarach (Acworth, GA), and Kayla Madsen (Flowery Branch, GA) each took a single shot.

"Jenny Knibbs did very well for us both up top and in the midfield and clearly her goal today was huge. Hannah Norwood won a lot of balls for us in the back and cut out some potentially dangerous situations for our defense. Obviously we are very excited about our first conference win and to win on the road against a quality team like AUM (pre-season #4 pick in the SSAC coaches poll) is even better. We have been on the road for the last 5 games so it will be great to get back home for our next match against Spring Hill," concluded Coach Lochstampfor.

The Golden Tigers are scheduled to play Spring Hill College at the Allen Creek Soccer Complex, at 7:00pm, on Saturday, September 17th.
