Tigers Fall to NAIA Defending Champs
Brenau completes the most successful regular season in history with a 12-4 overall record. The Tigers honored their lone senior - Taylor Bates - in a ceremony prior to the start of the match.
Although the Tigers did a tremendous job of holding the visitors scoreless in the first half, they were not able to repeat that feat in the second stanza. Christina Bovjberg got on the end of a cross with 36 minutes left in the match and put it away for the visitor's 1-0 lead. Lee's second goal was scored with 12 minutes left in the match on a defensive miscue that was headed home by Lee's Laura Thacker. The final goal was scored by Leah Fortune on a counter attack in the waning moments as the Tigers tried to push numbers forward to get on the scoreboard. For the game, Lee outshot the Tigers 23 to 15 and recorded seven corners to Brenau's two. Brenau's Tori Brown (Windermere, Fla.) was spectacular in goal recording ten saves to her counterpart's six.
Coach Lochstampfor, following the match, praised the effort of his team, "Despite the score, we defended very well and had some very nice opportunities during the run of play that just didn't fall for us. Tori Brown, Elizabeth Campbell (Richmond Hill, Ga.) and Hannah Norwood (Grayson, Ga.) were excellent and Janay Hunt's (Madison, Ala.) ability to mark one of the fastest players in the NAIA was brilliant. Linda Chukwuji (Lagos, Nigeria) did a great job attacking and defending for us all day. They are a very good team and I thought their defense was solid all day."
Brenau will now turn its focus to post-season as they are the recipient's of the No.4 seed in the SSAC Tournament which begins on Nov. 3. The Tigers will host the AUM Warhawks in the first round - to be held at the Allen Creek Soccer Complex. The Tigers defeated the Warhawks back on Oct.13 by the score of 1- 0. Game time will be announced soon.
