Golden Tigers Soccer Falls in Double Overtime
The NAIA Game of the Week lived up to expectations as the #20 Brenau Golden Tigers soccer team lost a thriller to # 12 William Carey University, 2-1, in two overtimes.
After both teams struggled to score during the first three quarters of the match, the Crusaders finally broke the scoreless tie in the 70th minute when Emmaleigh Davis found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. Undaunted, in less than a minute later, however, the Golden Tigers evened up the score as Kayla Madsen (Flowery Branch, GA) found Esther Anyanwu (Lagos, Nigeria) to make the score, 1-1.
With neither team seizing the advantage during regulation or the first overtime, the Crusaders' Emmaleigh Davis again found a crease in the 102nd minute to end the match, 2-1.
The Golden Tigers outshot the Crusaders 21-14, and keeper Tori Brown (Windermere, FL) saved five shots on the evening.
"It was the type of game you would expect from two top 25 ranked teams and we really stepped up to the challenge of playing a higher ranked and excellent WCU side. I felt like we held possession of the ball and created some unbelievable opportunities that we failed to capitalize on and they eventually got the game winner," said head coach Mike Lochstampfor. "However, we have a lot to take away from this match which will suit us well as we head into our October conference schedule. I am really proud of this team's overall effort and our defensive performance tonight was incredible."
With the loss, Brenau falls to 6-3-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
The Golden Tigers resume their conference schedule on October 4th at 4 pm eastern for Homecoming Weekend when they face Faulkner University.
