Soccer Runs Past Reinhardt 5-1
The #17 Brenau soccer team scored three first-half goals to overwhelm Reinhardt (Ga.) University 5-1 on Tuesday evening in Gainesville.
The Golden Tiger offensive attack was led by a strong performance by their veteran players as all five goals were scored by seniors.
In the seventh minute senior Taylor Salmon found fellow Vanessa Alexander to give Brenau an early 1-0 lead. In the 26thminute, senior Kayla Madsen took an assist from senior Jenny Knibbs to increase the lead, while only three minutes later, Brenau used their momentum to notch their third score as Madsen found Alexander for her second goal of the half and third goal of the season.
In the second half, Knibbs stretched the Golden Tiger lead to 4-0 in the 64th minute when the Doncaster, England native found the back of the net off Madsen's second assist of the match.
Reinhardt forward Stephanie Goins scored in the 67th minute to cut their deficit to 4-1, but the Golden Tigers answered in the 74th minute as Knibbs scored her second goal off an assist from senior Elizabeth Campbell to secure the 5-1 victory.
"We came out strong tonight against a team that's been doing very well and that typically gives us a lot of problems," said head coach Mike Lochstampfor. "Our finishing in the first half was clinical. Although they mounted some pressure in the second half, our defense was up to the challenge and really didn't give Reinhardt many looks on goal".
"It was great for us to get the win especially going into Saturday's match up with Northwood which will be another test and opportunity for us".
The Golden Tigers dominated shots on goal outshooting the Eagles 25-7. Senior keeper Tori Brown saved two shots on goal for the win.
Brenau continues their long home stand on Saturday in a battle of top teams when they play host to #4 Northwood (Fla.) University at 2:00 pm eastern.
