Soccer Opens SSAC Schedule With Win
Two first half goals helped the Brenau soccer team slip past Middle Georgia State 3-2 to open Southern States Athletic Conference play on Thursday in Gainesville.
At the 6:12 mark, Maddie Corley helped gain early momentum for the Golden Tigers as the sophomore found senior forward Jasmine Brewster for the opening goal of the match. In the 17th minute, Corley then added her second assist of the half , finding fellow sophomore Taylor Bennett to give the home team an early 2-0 lead.
Middle Georgia's Jade Washington rallied the visiting squad with a goal at 35:53 to cut into the lead 2-1.
In the second half, sophomore Tiffany Raygor scored an unassisted goal- her second goal of the season- to help increase the lead to 3-1.
Sam Silva scored a late goal for the Knights, who were unable to complete their comeback.
Keeper Anela Melton earned the win with four saves against 13 shots for the Golden Tigers.
The home team outshot the visiting Knights 16-13 in the match.
Brenau (5-3 overall, 1-0 SSAC) next travels to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to face #4 William Carey in an SSAC matchup on Thursday at 6:30 pm eastern.
