Skyhawks Defeat Soccer 2-1 in AAC Action
West Point, Georgia- The Brenau soccer team scored a goal in the 65th minute, but was unable to find the equalizer in a narrow 2-1 loss to Point (Ga.) University in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Thursday evening.
The host Skyhawks (5-4-1 overall, 3-1-1 AAC) surprised the Golden Tigers with a corner kick only 1:15 into the match as Jessica Torres headed in the first goal for a very early 1-0 lead. The Brenau defense held fast throughout the remainder of the half to keep the score at 1-0 going into the break.
After the intermission, Point increased its lead as Jasmine Marquez scored from the middle of the field in the 50th minute to make the score 2-0.
In the 65th minute, Brenau Chayla Park scored an unassisted goal to make the score 2-1. However, the Brenau offense could not generate the equalizer as Point escaped with the close conference victory.
Golden Tiger keeper Anela Melton stopped seven shots on goal, while her counterpart Rachel Ash saved four shots for the hosts.
Brenau (4-5-1 overall, 3-3 AAC) will not face Bluefield (Va.) University on Saturday as originally scheduled as the match has been cancelled and will not be made up.
Instead, the next match will be against Bryan (Tn.) College (5-7 overall, 4-3 AAC) on October 9th at 5:30 pm at Allen Creek Soccer Complex in Gainesville.
