Soccer Rolls Past Columbia 4-1 in AAC Play
Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau soccer team scored a season high four goals to defeat Columbia (S.C) College in the team's opening match of Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Saturday.
The Golden Tigers overwhelmed the visiting Koalas with a 24-4 shot advantage, including holding the visitors to only one shot attempt in the second half.
The scoring began at the 11:13 mark as sophomore forward Itzel Rivera assisted junior Destiny Balkiz for an early 1-0 lead. At the 15 minute mark, Columbia's Charlotte Daniels evened the score at 1-1, but the Golden Tigers answered as sophomore Christina Gormley found freshman Cindy Bonilla for her first collegiate goal to give Brenau the 2-1 advantage.
In the 66th minute, Bonilla then assisted Rivera for her first goal of the season to increase the lead to 3-1. The scoring continued when in the 78th minute, junior Mackenzie Callas beat Koala keeper Mistify Honstein off a Balkiz assist to close out the match and give the Golden Tigers their first conference victory of the early season.
The Golden Tigers also posted a decided 11-0 advantage in corner kicks, while Brenau keeper Daphne Ramirez saved one shot in the match.
Brenau (1-3 overall, 1-0 AAC) next travels to face Columbia (S.C.) International University (3-0 overall, 2-0 AAC) in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday at 7 pm eastern.
