Soccer Rolls Past CIU 4-1 in AAC Play
Gainesville, Georgia- A strong offensive performance propelled the Brenau soccer team to a decisive 4-1 victory over Columbia International (SC) University in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Saturday.
After several close missed opportunities in the early part of the first half, the Golden Tigers finally capitalized in the 31st minute as Cindy Bonilla beat her defender but was fouled in the box. On the penalty kick, Jade Echols slipped a shot past the Rams' keeper Nadia Threatt for the first goal of the game.
In the 40th minute, the Golden Tigers offense continued to roll as sophomore Cindy Bonilla scored off a nice touch from senior Mackenzie Callas to increase the score to 2-0.
Just after intermission, junior Abbie George blasted a long goal over the head of Threatt to give the home team a commanding 3-0 lead. The Golden Tigers then capped off the evening in the 53rd minute as Callas notched her second goal of the season to make the score 4-0.
In the 70th minute, the Rams' Rebekah Reinhard beat Brenau keeper Daphne Ramirez to avoid the shutout.
Brenau outshot Columbia International 17-7, including a dominant 12-4 first half. Ramirez saved four shots, while Threatt saved six shots.
Brenau (2-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 AAC) next hosts Bryan (TN) College (1-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 AAC) on Wednesday at 5:30 pm in Gainesville.
