Soccer Defeats Bluefield 1-0 in AAC Competition
Bluefield, Virginia- A first half goal by senior Mackenzie Callas and a strong defensive effort propelled the Brenau Golden Tigers soccer team past the Bluefield (Va.) College Rams 1-0 in a critical Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup.
The win keeps the Golden Tigers in the hunt for the Appalachian Athletic Conference Soccer Championships, which will limit participation to only the top four teams in the conference standings. The victory gave Brenau 19 total points, which trails Montreat (N.C.) College (21 points) and Tennessee Wesleyan (Tenn.) University (21 points) with one regular season match remaining.
Against Bluefield, the Brenau offense outshot the Rams 13-1 in the first period, but were unable to find the back of the net until Callas beat Rams keeper Anna Flinchum at the 37:34 mark to give her team a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the Golden Tiger defense held fast as the Rams managed only one shot on goal for the remainder of the period.
Brenau outshot Bluefield 29-3 in the match, including an overwhelming 16-2 shots on goal.
Brenau (6-5-1 overall, 6-5-1 AAC) finishes out the regular season against Truett McConnell (Ga.) University (11-0-1 overall, 11-0-1 AAC) on Tuesday November 17th at 7:00 pm in Cleveland, Ga.
