OT Goal Propels Soccer Past Point 2-1
West Point, Georgia- An overtime goal by senior Itzel Rivera propelled the Brenau soccer team past Point (Ga.) University 2-1 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday.
The Golden Tigers came out fast as sophomore Kylie McGlone beat Skyhawk keeper Erica Burkhart within the first two minutes of play for an early 1-0 lead. The goal was McGlone's first of the season.
Brenau held the lead until the 23rd minute when Point's Keiry Bonilla found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1.
In the second half, the host Skyhawks held a 10-4 shot advantage, but the Golden Tigers' defense held fast to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Rivera scored the golden goal to secure the team's second victory of the season. The goal was the second of the season for Rivera, who is tied for the team lead in goals.
Brenau keeper Daphne Ramirez earned the win with eight saves, while Bonilla saved six shots in the loss.
Brenau (2-4-1 overall, 2-4-1 AAC) next hosts Kentucky Christian University (0-11 overall, 0-7 AAC) on Saturday at 5 pm. The team will honor its nine seniors immediately after the match.
