Soccer Loses in Double Overtime to Columbia
Columbia, South Carolina- The Brenau soccer team lost a 1-0 double overtime heartbreaker to Columbia (SC) College in the opening round of the 2021 Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday.
The match was evenly played throughout regulation as both teams managed 18 shots, but neither could break through with a score.
In the first overtime, junior Camila Penagos had a scoring opportunity, but her shot was saved by Koala's keeper Mistify Honstein.
In the second overtime, Brenau had two other scoring chances as senior Rebecca McDaniel and freshman Hayden Galbraith each had shots on goal, but both were rebuffed by Honstein to keep the shutout intact.
Columbia's Jordan Myers broke through in the 106th minute to score the game-winner and help the 7 seed Koalas (11-7 overall, 8-6 AAC) advance in the tournament.
Penagos led the Golden Tigers with four shots on goal, while Brenau keeper Daphne Ramirez saved nine shots in the loss.
The loss ends the season for the Golden Tigers, which finishes with an overall 5-9-1 record (5-8-1 AAC).
