Brenau Swimmers Win Champions of Character Award
March 9, 2010
Kansas City, Mo- The Brenau swim team picked up a coveted award this past weekend when they were selected as the Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Team Award winner. The announcement was made in conjunction with the NAIA National Swimming and Diving Championships held in St. Peters, Mo. Upon submission of the nomination form, Coach Gabby Matthews said "A person with character is someone who is always striving to do the right thing no matter what everybody else chooses to do. My team strives to do their best every day. SWIM SMART + TRAIN HARD = BEST RESULTS."
Team Captain Lucianne Kimura said, "Without character, there is no team. Our team has been rebuilding itself since its comeback in 2006. It has been a long journey, yet my team and I work constantly on being consistent, trustworthy, and always believing in each other. When you dream BIG, think BIG and act BIG, you get BIG results."
The team volunteered in many projects throughout the year, including the Tri2Remember Triathlon that was held at Laurel Park on September 19, an event designed to raise funds for the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimers Association. The team served as "Brenau Angels" functioning as lifeguards for the swimming portion of the race. They also hosted a swim clinic at the campus pool for the kids of Hall County, complete with face painting and a costume contest. The team also offers free swim lessons to the Be Healthy Club once a year, as well as working every other weekend donating swimming lessons for kids that can't afford it.
