Swimming Wins Sewanee Invitational
On day two of the 14th Annual Sewanee Invitational, the Brenau swimming secured 930 points, winning 9 of 14 events for a 235 point win over host Sewanee University.
The 200 medley relay team of Talia Sola, Mary Katherine Jabbia, Michelle Billeaud and Ella Kleinschmidt opened the meet with a win in 1:52.41. Sophomore Courtney Hayward followed with a meet record in the 400 IM (4:43.47), while Sarah Frey finished in third place in 4:57.08.
Sprinters Billeaud, Kleinschmidt and Sophie Nasstrom finished 3-4-5 in the 50 yard freestyle with times of 25.39, 25.79 and 26.03 respectively.
Sola set a new meet and pool record in the 100 backstroke in 59.14, while freshman Madison Kosater and Amanda Smith finished third and fourth, hitting the wall at 1:04.18 and 1:04.21 respectively. Sola also set a meet record in the 200 yard backstroke (2:08.11).
Jabbia finished in second place in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:09.33, while Nasstrom found her season-best swim in 1:13.16. Kleinschmidt also captured first place in the 200 freestyle in 1:59.25.
In the 500 meter freestyle, Hayward led the way with a new meet record of 5:17.93, with Kleinschmidt (5:20.13) and Kathleen Rossi (5:46.94) also having strong showings.
Billeaud and Nasstrom garnered points in the 100 yard freestyle touching the wall in 56.17 and 58.57 respectively. Billeaud also captured first place in the 100 meter butterfly (59.56).
Hayward found her third win of the day in the 200 IM (2:17.89), followed by Jabbia (2:18.84), Sola (2:22.19) and Maria Quiroga (2:25.44). Brenau capped off their outstanding performances by winning the 200 Free Relay (1:45.34).
"This was an incredible weekend of racing for our team, everyone gave 100%," said head coach Blaire Bachman. "Winning the Sewanee Invitational for the first time is thrilling and well-deserved by this hardworking team! We have one more weekend on the road racing and then we will begin shifting our attention to hosting the Brenau Invitational".
The Golden Tigers next take to the pool on November 8th when the squad travels to Emory (Ga.) University for the Emory Invitational.
