Brenau Tennis Day One Results from GCSU

Milledgeville, Ga - The first day at the Georgia College and State Invitational was very positive for the Golden Tigers tennis team. Brenau is competing with a partial team since Lyn See Choo and Kate Mazackova are playing in the ITA Regionals in New Orleans. Competing against five NCAA II schools and one Junior College team, the Brenau squad won 10 out of 10 matches throughout the day.

In the C flight of the tournament, Nelli Martirosyan had a first round victory against Amber Fahrner from University of Tampa (6-2, 6-4) and a second round win over Christian Minnick from UNC-Pembroke (6-3, 6-1). Martirosyan will face Charlotte Fabricius from Clayton State in the semifinal.

On the other side of the draw, Eline Nagles won against Becky Ewing from University of Tampa (6-2, 7-5) and Heather Humphrey from ABAC (6-1, 6-2) to secure a spot in the semifinal. Nagles will play Tiffany Delias (Carson-Newman) for a chance to advance to the final.

Hannah Thompson had two straight-set wins in the B singles flight, over Michelle Lingner from GCSU (6-4, 6-1) and Maricel Quintero from UNC-Pembroke (6-0, 6-1). Thompson will play her semifinal match against Katie Brown (Carson-Newman) on Saturday morning.

Liubov Orlova started the day with a quick victory over Nikol Williams from University of Tampa, 6-0 6-1. Her second match, however, was quite a battle. Facing the number one seed in the B singles flight, Orlova fought back twice during the match (4-1 down in the first set and 5-2 down in the third set) to take a three set win over Lisa Setyon from GCSU. After over three hours on the court, Orlova finished the match with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win. Orlova is in the quarter final and will play Taryn Cappadona (Carson- Newman) on Saturday.

In doubles play, Nagles and Martirosyan were the first off the court as they beat Ewing/Ryan (Tampa) 8-0 in the B doubles flight. Playing in the A doubles draw, Orlova/Thompson beat Backham/Raymond also from Tampa, 8-5. Both doubles teams will play the quarter final round on Saturday.
