Brenau Tennis Swept By The Defending National Champions
Mobile, AL - On Thursday, the No. 8 Golden Tigers Tennis Team met their match in No. 1 Fresno Pacific University, in the quarterfinals of the 2011 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship. The Sunbirds were on a mission to prove to all spectators the reason why they were the defending National Champions. Brenau entered the Mobile Tennis Center with an overall record of 11-7, while Fresno Pacific arrived as 19-4.
In doubles, at the No. 1 spot, Lyn See Choo (Malaysia) and Hannah Thompson (England) rallied against Januskova and Boura, however they found themselves with a loss, at the score 8-6. Kate Mazackova (Czech Republic) and Liubov Orlova (Russia) were swept in the No. 2 spot, against Justin and Valladares, 8-0. The No. 3 doubles competition had fans at the edge of the seat, as Eline Nagels (Belgium) and Stephanie Moniz (England) battled for every point against Celma and McFeeters, falling short 9-7.
Before singles play began, the Sunbirds had established a strong lead of 3-0. At the No. 3 spot, Hannah Thompson attempted to gain momentum, however, Valladares clearly had the intensity on her side, winning 6-0, 6-1. Close by, in the No. 4 spot, Liubov Orlova and Justin demonstrated pure passion, as they competed. Justin was attempting to gain the final point that Fresno Pacific needed to advance to the semi-finals, while Orlova was hoping to win Brenau's 1st point. In the end, Justin won the match, 6-4, 6-1. The Golden Tigers were overpowered by the Sunbirds, 5-0, with 4 of the singles matches remaining unfinished. 3 out of the 4 matches were following suite, but Stephanie Moniz never lost focus, as she was winning her match, in the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 2-1.
