Tennis Blanks Lee on Senior Day
On Senior Day, the #7 Brenau tennis team honored their three senior players with a 9-0 shutout over Lee (Tn.) University.
After senior Stephanie Moniz and junior Maria Perdomo Medina opened doubles play with an 8-0 shutout, the senior paring of Dominika Jasova and Zalina Nazarova won their match 8-1 to give the Golden Tigers a 2-0 match lead. The #3 team of Kelley Cohron and Valeria Savina finished their match with a furious comeback to win the match 9-7 and complete a sweep of doubles play.
In individual play, Perdomo Medina won her #2 match to give the Golden Tigers a 4-0 lead, while Jasova clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tonya McGraner. Brenau swept through the remaining singles matches to complete the shutout.
"Senior Day is always an emotional time, but it seemed that our three seniors (Jasova, Moniz and Nazarova) used those emotions to bring their best tennis," said head coach Andre Ferreira. "They were focused and really took control from the get go".
"I was also very pleased with the way our doubles No. 3 fought today. They had a slow start and quickly were down 1-4, then 2-5. It is hard to turn doubles matches around when you find yourself in such a big hole, but Kelley and Valeria were patient and got more consistent as the match went on. It is a huge advantage to be up 3-0 going into singles play".
Brenau finishes off their regular season slate when they travel to face #5 SCAD-Savannah (Ga.) on Friday afternoon.
