Tennis Defeats #5 SCAD-Savannah
In a battle of top NAIA programs, the #7 Brenau Golden Tigers tennis team defeated #5 SCAD-Savannah (Ga.) 5-4 on Friday.
The Golden Tigers swept all three doubles matches as Dominika Jasova and Zalina Nazarova opened doubles play with an 8-3 win. The #2 team of Stephanie Moniz and Maria Perdomo Medina followed up with an 8-5 victory, while the #3 team of Valeria Savina and Kelley Cohron completed the sweep with an 8-5 win.
Moniz continued the Brenau momentum as she easily won her singles match 6-0, 6-0 to give the Golden Tigers a 4-0 team lead. However, Brenau failed to sustain momentum and dropped #3, #1 and #6 singles matches. At #2 singles, Perdomo lost the first set 1-6, but rallied to win the final two sets 6-1, 6-3 and secure the victory.
This was a huge win because we have come so close to winning against other top NAIA teams, so I was really happy for our group," said head coach Andre Ferreira. "Doubles was key for us once again. Stephanie [Moniz] had a quick win in singles and gave us a 4-0 lead overall. With 5 matches remaining, we only needed to win one of those. But it was very close and intense as SCAD is very talented and they did not give up. They were up a set on all five courts and fortunately Maria [Perdomo] came back to win and clinch in the third set".
