Tennis Falls in Season Opener

In the opening match of the season, the Brenau tennis team fell 7-2 to NCAA Division II Clayton State (Ga.) University in a non-conference meeting on Sunday afternoon.

In doubles play, the #1 team of Maria Perdomo and Patricia Recalde won the opening match 8-3 over Hannah Keeling and Raluca Pavel. However, the Golden Tigers were unable to sustain the early momentum as both the #2 and #3 doubles teams dropped their respective matches each by a narrow 8-6 margin.

In singles play, #1 Fatyha Berjane (JR/Casablanca, Morocco) tied the match 2-2 with a 4-1 (ret.) win over Hannah Keeling, but the Lakers swept the next three matches to clinch the overall victory.

"I think it was a closer match than the score indicates," said head coach Andre Ferreira. "All the doubles were competitive and we had chances in singles. Clayton State handled the big moments very well and deserved the win. "

"I think we can learn a lot from this match and understand which areas we need to work on."

Brenau (0-1 overall) next travels to Georgia Perimeter College on Friday for a 2 pm non-conference matchup.
