#5 Tennis Goes 2-1 at SSAC Roundup
The #5 ranked Brenau tennis team played a strong weekend at the second SSAC Roundup in Mobile, Ala. this past weekend as the squad defeated #18 Coastal Georgia 8-1 and #21 William Carey (Miss.) University 6-2 but lost to #1 Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.) University 8-1.
Against Auburn-Montgomery, the Golden Tigers lost all three doubles matches, but Maria Perdomo won her #2 singles match 6-3, 6-2 for the lone victory.
In the afternoon match, Brenau rebounded by winning the first two doubles matches to take a 2-1 into singles play.
Snezhana Kiseleva opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win, while Fatyha Berjane held off Daniella Caruso 6-1, 7-5 to give the Golden Tigers a 4-1 lead. At #3 singles, Patricia Recalde defeated Emy Alplund 6-4, 6-2 to secure the match for the Golden Tigers.
"As a coach, what I really liked was to see the way we overcame the morning losst," said head coach Andre Ferreira. "I knew the morning performance against AUM wasn't the best confidence booster for the afternoon match, but our girls showed tremendous maturity, put the morning match behind them and focused only at the task at hand. To beat a top 20 team in the country 8-1 is not easy and all the credit goes to our girls for turning the tables around."
In the final match of the weekend, Brenau used strong doubles play to against William Carey to take an early 3-0 lead.
Kelley Cohron added a 6-1, 6-1 win at #6 doubles over Hannah Bradford to make the match 4-0. After back-to -back singles losses at #4 and #5 singles, Recalde won her #3 singles match 6-3, 6-4 to give the Golden Tigers their second win of the weekend.
"The doubles matches played a huge role in our victory," said Ferreira. "Wins at #2 and #3 doubles took a lot of pressure off of the team. William Carey is under-ranked and is well-coached and it was good to see our players pull off a close win against a good team."
Brenau (7-3 overall, 6-1 SSAC) continue SSAC play on March 26th when they travel to Dalton State (Ga.) College for a 4 pm eastern match.
