Tennis Earns SSAC Postseason Honors
Members of the Brenau tennis team were recognized in the 2015 Southern States Athletic Conference Women's Tennis awards released by the conference office on Thursday.
Fatyha Berjane (JR/Casablanca, Morocco), Maria Perdomo and Patricia Recalde were each selected as 2015 SSAC All-Conference Team selections for their play during the 2015 season.
Berjane, who currently plays #1 singles for the Golden Tigers, is ranked #13 nationally and sports a 9-3 record in singles play this season. A transfer from Georgia Perimeter College, Berjane was also named the 2015 SSAC Newcomer of the Year for her standout play.
Perdomo, a 2014 NAIA All-American, is currently ranked #14 nationally and is 12-3 in singles play. The Canary Island, Spain native has been named as a four-time SSAC All-Conference player during her career at Brenau.
Recalde, also a newcomer to the Golden Tigers' program, is a first-time SSAC All-Conference selection and is 10-5 in singles play this season.
In addition to the player awards, head coach Andre Ferreira was named the 2015 SSAC Coach of the Year. After losing four letter winners from last year's #6 ranked team, including NAIA All-Americans Dominika Jasova, Stephanie Moniz and Zalina Nazarova, Ferreia led his squad to a #3 national ranking in 2015. This is the first Coach of the Year win for Ferreira.
Junior Kelley Cohron (JR/Buford, Ga.) was selected as the team's Champions of Character recipient. The Buford, Ga. native was selected this past summer for the Red Cross/NAIA Collegiate Leadership program and was the lead coordinator for two blood drives on the Brenau campus this year.
Additionally, Cohron, Perdomo and Snezhana Kiseleva (SO/Naberezhnye Chelny, Russia) earned SSAC All-Academic stats for their strong academic performances. Honorees must have at least 24 semester hours and attain a minimum of a 3.25 GPA.
"I'm excited about our group this year," said Ferreira. "I am particularly happy for Maria, Fatyha and Patricia. Patricia is just a tremendous athlete with a lot of raw talent. The sky is the limit for her and she just needs time to recognize that. Fatyha is an experienced competitor who brought an extensive list of accomplishments to Brenau. And Maria has been such a positive leader on and off the court. It's fun to watch her play and just be around her. She brings a lot to the program. "
Brenau looks to continue their successes at the SSAC Championships this weekend in Mobile, Ala and at the NAIA National Tournament
