#6 Tennis Splits at SSAC Roundup
The #6 Brenau tennis team split two matches on the final day of the Southern States Athletic Conference Roundup in Mobile, Alabama on Sunday.
Against #1 Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.) University, the Golden Tigers found themselves in an early 3-0 hole after falling in doubles play.
The Warhawks then carried their momentum over into singles play as #6 Kelley Cohron fell 6-2, 6-1, then Rebecca Pijls dropped her match at #2 singles, 6-0, 6-3.
Patricia Recalde and Paula Rives both battled at #4 and #5 singles respectively, while #1 Fatyha Berjane defeated Paula Diaz 7-5, 6-1 to make the score 8-1.
"AUM came out very strong in the morning match and quickly took control of the doubles," said head coach Andre Ferreira. "Despite the tough start in doubles, our team brought good intensity in singles, took a point at No. 1 singles and lost in third-set super tiebreakers on courts No. 4 and No. 5."
In the afternoon, the Golden Tigers again found themselves down 2-1 after doubles play to #24 University of Mobile (Ala.), then lost at #6 singles to make the score 3-1.
However, Brenau regained their command of the court and swept the remaining five singles matches to clinch a 6-3 win.
"An hour after our 1-8 loss to AUM, we were back on the court for our second match of the day and fourth match of the weekend," said Ferreira. "In fact, this was our third match against a nationally ranked opponent in less than 48 hours."
"Credit to our girls for their resilience and determination as they quickly regrouped, put the doubles points behind, and came out extra motivated in singles."
Brenau (14-3 overall, 8-1 SSAC) next plays #3 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College on Wednesday, April 6th at 2 pm in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
