Tennis Takes Two; Stays Undefeated in AAC Play
The #14 Brenau tennis team won a pair of Appalachian Athletic Conference matches with wins over Bluefield and Union this past weekend to remain undefeated in conference play.
Against Bluefield, the host team was unable to field #2 and #3 doubles and #4, #5 or #6 singles due to injury. However, Bluefield won the only doubles match with an 8-6 victory. In singles play, Brenau's Kirsten Dickins won her match over Mykenzie Roach, 6-2, 6-2, and also secure the 6-1 team win.
"Bluefield played extremely well in doubles and singles," said head coach Andre Ferreira. "Despite knowing they couldn't possibly win the dual match due to forfeiting 5 lines, their players fought hard on every court and gave our team a tremendous challenge. I'd like to think this match served as a good preparation for Union."
In the second match of the weekend, the Golden Tigers used a strong team performance to roll past #21 Union College 9-0.
After a sweep in doubles play, the Golden Tigers Rebecca Pijls defeated Brittany Lamb (6-1, 6-0) in #3 singles and then Paula Rives defeated Carla Delgado at #5 singles (6-0, 6-0) to clinch the match.
"Coming into the match we knew Union would be a tricky, difficult opponent, as they are strong in several positions," said Ferreira. "They have played a tough schedule this spring and have been slowly climbing up in the conference and national rankings. Without a doubt this was a good win for our team."
"It was particularly important that we believed we could win points in every spot and our team stayed focused on their game plan in both doubles and singles play."
Brenau (9-6 overall, 7-0 AAC) next plays #16 SCAD-Atlanta (8-4 overall, 6-0 AAC) on Friday at 2 pm in Atlanta. The match will feature the top two ranked teams in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
