Tennis Falls to Lindsay Wilson in NAIA Quarterfinals
The Brenau tennis team pushed #4 Lindsay Wilson (Ky.) College, but came up short at the 38th Annual NAIA Women's Tennis National Championships held at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama on Friday.
The quarterfinal matchup began on Thursday as the Golden Tigers won #1 doubles with Peeraya Charoensirisutthikul and Maya Mammetgulyyeva defeating Minja Gligic and Jovana Peric, 8-6. However, the Blue Raiders rallied with victories at both #2 and #3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead.
Lindsay Wilson extended their lead into singles play as Peric defeated Patricia Recalde Pacua 6-2, 6-2 to give the Blue Raiders a 3-1 lead. However, inclement weather halted play until Friday.
After play resumed Friday morning, Brenau regained momentum as Kirsten Dickins held off Gabriella Pedroza 6-2, 7-6 at #6 singles to cut the score to 3-2. The Golden Tigers' rally continued into #1 singles as Charoensirisutthikul rolled past Gligic 6-3, 7-5 to even the match at 3-3.
However, Lindsay Wilson answered the challenge as Lucia Diaz narrowly edged out Paula Rives Palau 7-5, 7-6 at #5 singles to take a 4-3, then Fiona Curty outlasted Rebecca Pijls 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 at #3 singles to clinch the victory for the Blue Raiders.
Brenau closes out the season with 16 victories and will return four letterwinners to the 2018-19 team.
